Project

Clarendon Gas Works

Working next to a live gas main & third-party assets

This multi-phase concrete based development posed challenges due to its location which required innovative foundation to avoid obstructions around the gas works, existing Moselle River and close collaboration with the EA, Highway Agency and Network Rail.

We used lean design to develop achievable plans for substructure and superstructure, and bridging foundation to navigate obstructions across various gasholder pits.

Approximately 50% of the site contains basement car parks next to railway lines. Walsh was instrumental in the third-party approval process for the substructure design with Network Rail and drainage diversions with Thames Water. Our scope also included extensive S278 and highway works for adoptable highway roads and cycle routes through the development and the site-wide drainage strategy.

The project was situated adjacent to live gas mains and a Pressure Reduction Skid (PRS) was active adjacent to one of the blocks. We worked closely with the design team to coordinate efficient design solutions which allowed for works to be carried out adjacent to the easement zones. We also liaised with Cadent to agree the design solutions and allow for smooth transition from initial design to construction.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
