Specialist Engineering Design for MMC & Off-Site

Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) focuses on adding value to the construction programme by using off-site factory assembled construction techniques. Walsh has been at the forefront of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) and innovative techniques using MMC for over 20 years.

On turnkey projects, like the Mace ā€˜Rising Factoryā€™, Walsh has designed a precast structural frame system that enabled a tower floor and vertical structure to be assembled within a 55 hour working week which also
included the cladding, principle services, bathroom pods and modular utility cupboards. The aim being to reduce overall construction time by 50%. Walsh has completed schemes in Concrete Frame, Modular HRS RC
Frame, Full Volumetric Frame, Precast Frame, CLT, unitised steel cassette frames and Steel Concrete Hybrid Frame.

As engineers, being involved at an early stage allows Walsh to explore the solutions available to the developer including Cat 1 (full 3d volumetric off-site), Cat 2 (2D panellised off-site), onsite and hybrid MMC solutions, benchmark these against traditional construction techniques, work closely with planning authorities and make recommendations alongside cost, programme duration and embodied carbon calculations.
This will then inform the development strategy whilst allowing appropriate, flexible foundations and substructures to commence and manufacturing contracts to be secured even whilst decisions about the superstructure are still being made.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
