Christina Ayriss
Senior Engineer
"During my degree, I undertook several summer placements at Walsh. Upon graduating, I returned and quickly developed a strong foundation in technical knowledge and appreciation of industry practice. As my experience grew, I was able to make technical design decisions with an awareness of how each decision influences the wider project in terms of coordination with other disciplines, sustainability, H&S and commercial impact. I’ve come a long way at Walsh and one of the best parts of the job is to pass on what I have learnt by mentoring new graduates and summer placements. I recently took a sabbatical to rest, recharge and see the world but now I’m back and ready to take on the next challenge!"
Max Watson
Graduate Engineer
"At Walsh, you learn a lot about the importance of buildability and how to read and understand different types of structural drawings. I wasn’t taught this at university, even though it is an essential skill to learn. Even as a recent graduate, I feel as if I’m given a lot of responsibility. I’m briefed, shown some worked examples and the important building regulations to follow. After that, I work independently, calling on support as I need it and incorporate feedback from more senior engineers into my designs. I feel as if this hands-on approach is the best way to learn."
Phoebe Middlewood
Administrator
"I joined Walsh to do a Business Administrator (Level 3) apprenticeship. Having already studied business at school, I wanted to carry on learning and progress by balancing this with on-the-job experience rather than going to college full-time. I have one day per week to dedicate to my college work and can do this as a full day or split into chunks, depending on the dayto- day requirements of my work. I have learnt so much during my time at Walsh and had the opportunity to take on senior administration responsibilities. The people and social aspects make Walsh a really great place to work."
Garreth Joyce
Director
"I have been at Walsh for 18 years and progressed from graduate structural engineer to board director in 2019. I have been involved in high profile and complex projects including Olympic structures, Coppermaker Square, one of London’s largest and prestigious PRS schemes, and the Westfield London shopping centre extension which created the largest shopping centre in Europe. We offer an enviable balance between working on large projects like these with a friendly and diverse environment more akin to a smaller consultancy. Our staff retention history and the career progression of so many of our team are clear evidence of this as we ambitiously push the company forward."
