Earls Court Development

Bringing engineering value to regenerative Masterplan

With a rich history as a former exhibition centre, EC2 is set to breathe new life into the area. Spanning three levels, the site encompasses residential, commercial, and recreational spaces. The scheme emphasises community engagement and sustainability, with 1,000 homes, office facilities, and cultural venues.

Phase EC2 Planning Support

The Ā£10 billion development marks a significant milestone in the ambitious revitalisation efforts of an iconic area. With the client’s vision to ā€œbring the wonder back to Earls Court,ā€ we have commenced works on the EC2 aspect of the project, forming one of the first phases of the masterplan, which includes its tallest tower of 45 storeys (WB04). Designed to be a visual beacon, this tower will stand out from all angles and help define the new identity of the area.

EC2 includes the Empress Place and Aisgill Gardens areas and features a diverse range of uses. The development comprises 300,000 sq ft of residential space, which includes student accommodation, affordable housing, and private residences. Additionally, it incorporates 9,000 sq ft of retail space and various amenities, leisure and cultural facilities.

SIte Challenges

The site is structured across three distinct levels:

  • 4m AOD: Existing ground level
  • 8m AOD: A raised boulevard stretching from Empress Place to the southern edge of the site
  • 12m AOD: Table Park, located above a transfer structure spanning the live railway line retained from the former exhibition centre

This multi-level configuration required careful structural planning to accommodate public spaces, infrastructure, and architectural intent.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a cornerstone of the project, which aims to set a benchmark for sustainable design and operation in London.

Our thorough analysis and innovative problem-solving mitigated risks associated with the project. Additionally, our real-time feedback throughout Stage 2, using our Embodied Carbon Assessment Tool, helped the whole design team deliver a sustainable, lean, and buildable solution.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
