Hawley Road Primary School

Concrete frame & timber structure designed for challenging school layout

A new build and conversion scheme (including a Grade II listed building), posed no problem for Walsh, giving us the opportunity to showcase our engineering skills.

The eye-catching Hawley Primary School was the first phase of the Hawley Wharf Masterplan, a canal-side development by Stanley Sidings in Londonā€™s Camden.

Walsh acted as civil and structural engineers from the initial planning stage to completion of the school which comprises of a new-build three-storey structure and the conversion and integration of a Grade II listed building at 1 Hawley Road.

With its challenging layout, featuring structure stepping and orientation change, Walsh chose to use a reinforced concrete frame for its flexibility in managing transfers and varying load paths following investigation of multiple material options. Throughout the scheme, low-carbon design was prioritised which resulted in a 75% improvement over the Part L requirements at the time.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
