Project

Midland Metro Hospital

Significant financial and carbon savings on hospital design

Walsh design managed to save several millions of pounds for the Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust, whilst creating a low-carbon solution which saved hundreds of tonnes of carbon as shown from Walsh’s embodied carbon assessment.

This is a 10-storey hospital, with a total floor area covering 150,000m2 – the size of 21 football pitches.

Projects of this scale are rare and this project maximises the benefits of post-tensioning due to its inherent stiffness, reduced material quantities, structural depths and number of piles.

The savings are impressive, however the delivery of the project is just as important. The relationship throughout the project between Walsh, PSC, the design team and frame contractor were integral to the successful delivery of a project of this scale.

The savings and delivery made from adopting a PT solution on Midland Metropolitan Hospital sit proudly in Walsh’s achievements in their longstanding history within post-tensioning.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
