Quay House

Integrated engineering approach delivers elegant & sustainable hotel design

Walsh were appointed by The Firethorn Trust to carry out design services on the Quay House. Walsh’s involvement with the key design aspects of the tower resulted in a structural frame that is an elegant solution to complement the architectural aesthetics and space planning requirements.

The main building façade has a unique design which consists of curved ultra-high performance concrete panels with cast-in pattern and pigmentation creating a distinct texture and aesthetic of the tower.

Working from stage 3 we simplified the upper floor column layout which in turn allowed us to optimise the transfer structure at level 3 where the building changes column grid, façade and floor plate extent. In addition, further cost savings in the design of the piled raft solution were found by working closely with our Geotechnical Engineers.

Early engagement and liaising directly with DLR and CRT meant that third-party AIP’s were in place on time, reducing risks to commencement of construction on-site.

Works have been carried out up to and including stage 4.

Through continuous design optimisations, close working with each discipline in the design team and direct engagement with third-party stakeholders, Walsh developed a structural solution that prioritised safety, material efficiency, buildability and reducing embodied carbon.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
