Post-tension design delivers clear spans for supermarket tenant at ground level on build-to-rent development

Working alongside Bouygues and the architects, ECE, Walsh prepared a competitive tender bid and alternative design proposals to successfully secure this project for London & Quadrant. Walsh was subsequently employed as Civil and Structural engineers, providing all structural designs and the civil design for two sewer diversions, including one 1800mm diameter trunk sewer, which were required to free up the site.

As part of the structural scheme, Walsh provided specialist post-tensioned slab design to minimise the weight of the superstructure. This helped reduce the load onto the transfer slab in order to provide a largely column-free space at ground floor. The transfer structure was also post-tensioned which maximised clear heights and kept spans between columns as wide as possible. Our experience in delivering similar mixed-use schemes meant that the design for the retail unit at ground level was a smooth process with a successful end result.

Also of note is that as a part of the design team, we utilised a collaborative BIM workflow to achieve a co-ordinated information package consistent with BIM Level 2. The benefits of the BIM level 2 approach ensured the timely delivery of a fully coordinated design package.

Taking Sustainability Seriously

Sustainability is in our DNA and we have our own ambitious goals to achieve Net Zero as a business and with our designs. With innovative in-house monitoring tools, Walsh clients have seen on average reductions of 10-20% total embodied carbon, with some of our flagship work achieving 60-70% reductions compared with baseline figures.
